Top 5 Sites I'd Like to Visit Countdown #5: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

I’m a Wisconsin native. There are so many beautiful and surprising places to go in Wisconsin, if you can get there through the mountains of snow and frigid temperatures that seem to prevail most of the year. The Apostle Islands National Seashore lies on the banks of Lake Superior in far northwestern Wisconsin. The Apostle Islands are famous for their ice caves that form naturally when the winter conditions are optimum. Much of the year, the Apostle Islands are only accessible by boat, but in the long cold winters when Lake Superior freezes over, visitors can walk or drive there via the frozen lake.

While there are portions of this National Seashore that are on the mainland, most visitors want to go to the islands. There are several boat charter companies and ferries that can provide access.

Northern Wisconsin is an amazing getaway, especially in the fall. Beautiful rolling glacier-formed hills with trees of many colors, crisp fall air and nice people who will hug you at the drop of a hat. Wisconsinites would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. They’ll also probably try to get you to eat some sort of cheese, offer you a beer and want to know if you’re a Packer fan. I better end this post before I get all misty-eyed.
