Top 5 Sites I'd Like to Visit Countdown #2: Dry Tortugas National Park

A short 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, there is a hidden national park smack dab in the middle of open ocean. Dry Tortugas National Park was established in 1935 and is the remnants of a 19th Century Fort.

Only accessible by sea plane or boat, Dry Tortugas is an oasis of relaxation, recreation and history. Visitors can walk the grounds, snorkel, observe marine life and learn about this amazing National Park. The Dry Tortugas website advises visitors to plan to spend the day at the site so they get the maximum experience.

I’ve attempted snorkeling many times. I don’t like the taste of salt water, so I rarely submerge my snorkel tube. One experience with snorkeling left me with a burn from fire coral, another attempt had me hyperventilating from being too close to a sea cucumber and the third (and most likely final) attempt had me sloshing against a sea wall trying to take my flippers off. My visit to Dry Tortugas will likely involve lots of retrospection, contemplation and definitely not any snorkeling.
